Great White Dopes

The aptly named band Great White had a concert in North Dakota with absolutely no social distancing measures and is now apologizing for doing so. You have probably never heard of this band but if you had it was probably because they were responsible for killing 100 people with pyrotechnics at a very small venue in 2003. As someone who plays a lot of video games I can understand the urge to try to get your personal best kill count, but holding a concert like this seems unnecessary.

Mental Health Awareness Month

A year ago I wrote about how Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit took his own life after a lifelong struggle with depression and his own mental health. A year later the charity Tiny Changes started by his bandmate and brother in his memory to help young people with mental health issues is celebrating it’s one year anniversary and continuing to raise funds and support for mental health services for young people. His brother noted that “When anyone, young or old, gets to a point where they want to try and find help, it’s just not easy. Expecting someone struggling with their mental health to just pick up a phone might even be too much – let alone filling out a form and see several different people. That’s going to be exhausting. The lack of instant help for people who might not be in immediate crisis really needs to change.”

Mental Health Awareness Month

Today marks 40 years to the day that Ian Curtis the frontman of Joy Division took his own life at only 23 years old. Mental Health Awareness Month

The self proclaimed King and Queen of Rock and Roll, Little Richard, passed away at the age of 87 this week. An inarguable icon in Rock who was a poor black bisexual rockstar from a small town in Georgia where it was against the rules to be any of those things. He burst onto the scene with two revolutionary albums that shot him and his outsized personality into superstardom and served as the inspiration for countless other artists. He released very little music after those initial works because he had a dream where he believed God instructed him to give up Rock and Roll. He immediately canceled the remaining stops on his tour, the plan he was supposed to be on a few days later for that tour crashed cementing his beliefs. He became a preacher, and although he continued to preform and released a few more songs, he never released the scope of music you would expect from an icon. I think he made the most of what he would consider his borrowed time from God and was an inspiration to people everywhere as an icon of music, gender, and sexuality.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Heath isn’t just a challenge for some people, it affects everyone and can strike in an instant. Singer Nick Cave was wrapping up his work on Skeleton Tree an album he was able to self fun and at that point was the highest amount of success he had seen. But before he recorded the vocals his fifteen year old son fell off a cliff and died. I think the sound of loss and heartbreak in the song I Need You is one of those things that is transcendentally human. One of the only certainties in life is loss, everyone knows the pain and people are more willing to help you cope than you think they are.

Runnin With The Devil

Many of the best stories in music have to be heard with some skepticism and don’t come out until years later in a tell all book, which is exactly the case with an exchange between Fred Durst and Eddie Van Halen. Limp Bizkit needed a guitar player and it was suggested they work together, Durst responded: “That would be hilarious. The greatest guitar player ever plays with the worst band ever,” but Van Halen said “Fuck it, let’s jam.” But it didn’t go well and Van Halen got pissed the band was smoking weed and stormed off without his gear. It was far from over because Van Halen showed up at Durst’s in a military assault vehicle that he had bought at an auction. “He got out wearing no shirt, his hair in a Samurai bun on top of his head, his jeans held up with a strand of rope and combat boots held together by duct tape. And he had a gun in his hand,”

“That asshole answered the door,” the author quotes Van Halen in the book. “I put my gun to that stupid fucking red hat of his, and I said, ‘Where’s my shit, motherfucker?’ Durst has an employee start grabbing his stuff and loading it in the military vehicle. “Eddie Van Halen stood on the front lawn of a residential home in Beverly Hills in broad daylight, smoking a cigarette while holding a gun on Fred Durst as he went back and forth from the house to the assault vehicle, lugging amps and guitars.”

The best thing music I heard this week was the worst thing I heard this week which is Puddle of Mud covering Kurt Cobain. There is nothing that could convince you more effectively of Kurt’s talent than listening to these one after the other. As I feared I am writing again of another talented musician who has died of Coronavirus. John Prine died at the age of 73 after writing countless thoughtful and funny songs that inspired a generation of musicians. I can’t write a proper obit for anyone so I’ll just do my best to share some of their best music.

Sad Times

Unfortunately with things heading in the direction they are I think I will have to write more of this type of thing than I would like to, but two musicians passed away this past week. Bill Withers who is a songwriting legend died at 81 of heart complications and Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne has passed away at only 52 of Coronavirus. I can’t write a proper obit for anyone so I’ll just do my best to share some of their best music.

Britney Spears received a lot hate this week for her post claiming she ran 100 meters in under 6 seconds on instagram, but as always they should leave Britney alone. Britney says she was just kidding: “Obviously I was joking about running the 100 meter dash in 5.97 seconds…the world record is held by Usain Bolt which is 9.58 seconds…but you better believe I’m coming for the world record”. She also had a more important message “During this time of isolation, we need connection now more than ever. Call your loved ones, write virtual love letters. Technologies like virtual communication, streaming and broadcasting are part of our community collaboration. We will learn to kiss and hold each other through the waves of the web. We will feed each other, re-destribute wealth, strike. We will understand our own importance from the places we must stay. Communion moves beyond walls. We can still be together.”

This album was largely written during a vacation from touring when Mitchell took some time to relax in Crete. Like all great women who make art the album is said to be largely inspired by her former boyfriends and boyfriend at the time James Taylor. Some of the songs are said to be written about specific people she had dated as if being the inspiration for a song about how hard it is to date you is the harder part then actually writing a great song.

Canceled

Pretty much every concert upcoming is cancelled I can’t figure out why though and didn’t have time to look into it. Normally when a bunch of artists get cancelled at once it is because someone wrote a tell all book.

One of two self-titled albums by the band Red House Painters which is more commonly known as Rollercoaster based on the cover art. The band had a lot of anxiety creating the album as they had already had a little bit of success and were nervous that people were actually watching them now. The album turned out to be many people’s favorites and the additional tracks they recorded at the time went toward 8 of the songs on their next album known commonly as Bridge.

Due to Coronavirus panic the masks available on Korn’s merch website have sold out. These type of masks don’t actually help prevent you from contracting it since they are not medical grade and would only help you if you already had it. The Magnetic Fields - Holiday (1994)

The fourth album from The Magnetic Fields was actually the third they recorded, but it was delayed for over a year due to issues with their label and ended up coming out nearly six months after their next album. During the recording of the album their female vocalist left the band so Steven Merritt ended up singing the songs he wrote himself and certainly gave the album a different sound with his deep voice than was originally expected for the album.

Some Garth Brooks fans got a little upset this week when they forgot that Barry Sanders was a very famous football player that is not at all related to Bernie Sanders.

This album was made with Crazy Horse, which without context sounds like a performance enhancing drug. This album is more soulful than Neil’s other albums and experimental. I suppose when you have made over twenty albums you are forced to start experimenting. I think this experiment netted good results.
