Music can be a powerful tool to help inspire people and help them feel less alone, I really appreciate the artists who use their platform to share their troubles as well as their successes. Counselor and psychotherapist, Laura Morse actually uses artists like Kendrick Lamar to speak to her male clients.

“Kendrick Lamar got my attention in 2012 when I first heard ‘Swimming Pools.’ Beyond the music is the attention to substance abuse, pushing limits and consequences. Kendrick took it a step further in ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ when he told the world: ‘I live with depression, anxiety AND I’m King Kendrick Lamar.’ The honesty of his struggles that accompany his success took my appreciation for him (and the POWER of Hip-Hop) to new heights. I began to see more Black men in my practice. Not just because their female significant others dragged them to couples therapy. And not only because they were struggling with substance use but because they were struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, vulnerability, and felt like it was safe to at least TRY to ask for help.”

Mental Health Awareness Month

Every year during Mental Health Awareness Month when I go to write this side of the newsletter and find relevant stuff to share it is much harder. In the Rap and R&B community there is a lot less sharing and openness about mental health but it seems like some of the younger new entrants are feeling more confident to share their experiences and try to help their fans. One of those artists is SZA who during an acceptance speech used her platform to discuss it; “Last year, I was suffering mentally and emotionally, and I wasn’t able to stay all buttoned up and together. I wasn’t able to hold a smile or to keep things looking normal,” she mentioned her decision to seek professional help. “I can say that after a year of a lot of intense work that I am happier, I am healthier, and I’m in control of my emotions and thoughts more than I’ve ever been before.”

Billie Eilish is still new on the scene and very young but has been unafraid to talk about Mental Health from the beginning. Hopefully her honesty inspires others to be more authentic and less like the photoshopped Instagram ad revenue machines most celebrities are using their reach to become. I wanted to take a moment to share some of the things she has said that have probably helped young people dealing with their own trauma that feel alone.
