Korn definitely knows what they are doing and others in the industry would be wise to follow the leader, fix their issues, but likely Korn Koffee will be untouchable.

Green Day -Dookie (1994)

An album that would be a turning point for a band who had just signed to a major label. Many of their former fans in the punk community looked at them as sellouts when this album came out. There is nothing more fun as a music fan than actively rooting against your favorite artists to succeed so you can be the only one who likes them. The impact of being ostracized from their former home in the punk community by the original hipsters really hurt Green Day as they finally found commercial success.

Ticketblaster

Ticketmaster has been hard at work using their monopoly on ticket sales and events to further screw over their customers. They have been investing millions in software and secret programs to help scalpers get mass quantities of tickets to resell at much higher prices to customers. That way Ticketmaster gets a fee on the initial sale to the scalper and an even bigger one when they sell it to the customer. The best part is they are denying it and will probably pay a paltry fine in the class action suit they are facing and find new ways to rip people off. This benevolent giant of a company is also developing technology to scan your face to use as a ticket for a game or concert, what could possibly go wrong?

Cloud Nothings -Here and Nowhere Else (2014)

The Cleveland band’s album has a much more positive spirit to it than their prior work. “I was feeling pretty good about everything so I just made stuff that made me happy,” said songwriter Dylan Baldi  That probably has something to do with the fact that it was written entirely outside of Cleveland. Each track was written in a different country on their 18 month long tour for their prior album. This enabled them to get right back into the studio once they returned to the US.

Ozzbummer

Ozzy Osbourne came out this week and said he didn’t have as much fun on his last Black Sabbath tour. I wonder why? Is it because he wasn’t able to bite of the head of a dove? Polish off the last of his coke with a stewardess before boarding the plane? Throw pieces of meat into the audience? Bite the head off a bat (please note the similarities and differences between that and a dove)? Push a TV out his hotel window? Take 25 Vicodin a day? Or could it be that he wasn’t able to once again while in Germany get wasted and goose-step around a formal party, strip naked, dunk his balls in a mans wine glass, then piss in it, and then kiss the man on the mouth. The man who was the head of CBS in Germany made sure he wasn’t welcome in the country for several years. This made him the first person since before World War II to be unwelcome in Germany for his association with the Sabbath.

Portugal. The Man -The Satanic Satanist (2009)

This album actually has two versions, The Majestic Majesty is the acoustic version of the album The Satanic Satanist released by the band. I really appreciate the stripped down version and also desperately wish that all my favorite albums also had an acoustic version. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you appreciated this album. The album is largely written from the perspective of the lead singers experience moving around rural Alaska with his parents. It has a childlike wonder to it and almost a singalong quality.

Pick Up Suspensions

A few University of Kentucky soccer players received suspensions for being involved in a pick up soccer game with the Foo Fighters and their coaches. Because it was final exam week and the NCAA's primary objectives are to ensure no athletes can make money for their talents and also to take the fun out of sports, the players weren't allowed to be involved in any activities that included coaches.

Initially releasing her music digitally with the name spelled "Ray" instead of "Rey", presumably to ensure that I would always spell it wrong initially and have to press backspace to fix it. Despite coming out in 2012 this album sounds like it is from another time full of glamour.

Strand of Oaks -Pope Killdragon (2010)

Tim Showalter returned to his home one night to find it had burnt to the ground, and shortly after his fiancé dumped him. He was homeless carrying his acoustic guitar around and sleeping on benches and writing songs in the streets of Philly. The tracks written during that time in his life reflect his downtrodden and melancholy environment. Although he takes a more imaginative approach to your typical song about adversity and depression. He writes a fictionililzation from the perspective of Dan Akyroyd struggling with the death of John Bellushi and seeking revenge on his drug dealer. The tones and moods of the album take you on a journey with it's memorable characters and is reminiscent of an indie film.

Sony has been fighting against growing speculation that three songs on Michael Jackson's first posthumous album were sung by a Michael Jackson impersonator. Their lawyers argued in court that even if they songs weren't sung by him they would still have the right to sell them under his name, but insisted they are real. That's a bit like saying that you didn't steal something but even if you did it was rightfully yours via the laws of finders keepers.

His first solo album comprised of tracks that felt out of place with the larger band with a strong focus on songwriting Some Devil showed a different side of Dave Matthews. A melancholy album dancing around the topic of death with a few of its songs inspired such as So Damn Lucky by the multiple serious car crashes that Dave experienced growing up in South Africa.

Grohling Alone

Dave Grohl, of Nirvana and The Foo Fighters, released a short new documentary he directed that features him playing all the instruments for a 27 minute long song.  Directing a documentary where you play all the instruments in an insanely long song is about as cocky as it gets. It probably helps that he is insanely likable, if Kanye had done something like this (not that he could), people would hold it up as a testament to his arrogance.

There is a Native American legend about a Buffalo Woman, who visits four times, as a different color each time she visits. When she is purple she takes a man on a mind altering journey. That is the symbolism and the experience as you listen to this album. It builds and builds and feels like you are flying over the plains as the horns blaze and trumpet your arrival. A swelling storm of instrumentals lead to even more impact when the few scattered lyrics throughout the album decide to make a more direct point. In addition to having some of my favorite cover art ever, this album is a trip I highly recommend.

Belle and Sebastian -If you're Feeling Sinister (1996)

This album was recorded in just a few days, and only a few months after the bands first album was finished. Stuart Murfoch, the band leader, was eager to get another album out right away. He had been in and out of hospitals for the last seven years with a chronic fatigue disorder. He felt like he had wasted years of his life. A doctor recommended he take some music and photography classes as part of his recovery. Eventually leading to this album and him taking the cover picture for the album. It is a picture of his friend he met in the hospital who had the same condition as him, taken as she wiped the tears from her eyes after being swept up in the emotion of her struggle.

A video went viral this week of a metal fan eating cold beans directly from the can in a mosh pit, I'm not sure which I would be less likely to do: be in a mosh pit, or eat cold beans from a can. I suppose the Mad Max scenario where I would have to do both for survival is as likely as me doing either separately.

The Antlers - Hospice (2009)

One of the most sorrowful albums you are likely to find aptly named Hospice, this album takes you through all the stages of grief. This album switches between perspectives as it follows the journey of a young woman dying of cancer in Hospice care from the eyes of her boyfriend and her nurse. This somewhat autobiographical album is tough to listen to all the way through without having a strong emotional response. The most upbeat song on the album is a metaphor for the couple deciding to get an abortion. It doesn't get much darker or more honest than this album.

The Killers - Sam's Town (2006)

Lead singer of Brandon Flowers proclaimed before the album's release that it would be one of the best of the last twenty years. A bold proclamation for the band's second album that managed to actually live up to that declaration. This album delves through the ups and the downs of going back to your home town. The band shied away from using auto-tune which helps to give the album its authentic feel. It's felt in the lyrics, as well with the song Uncle Johnny recounting the real drug addiction his uncle faced, and throughout thoughts on what it means to be home.

Blink of an Eye

Travis Barker the drummer of Blink 182 has had a few weeks off trying to recover from serious blood clot issues. Unfortunately he got in a car accident with a school bus while driving his 14 year old son and is now facing additional health issues after being dazed from the crash.

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush (1970)

Neil Young drove a car up to the studio that was a complete piece of trash billowing smoke from the windows as well as the exhaust. He had the cops pull their weapons on him in front of the studio and despite having no license they just let him go and he went on to record the album. He originally intended to only record the song featuring the piano in studio as he had already recorded the rest at his house but it sounded so good he re-recorded it all. After the gold rush was his 3rd album after the success of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young successful album Deja Vu.

Mental Health Awareness Month

British singer James Blake took to Twitter to talk about the response he often gets to his songs that have lyrics that are emotionally vulnerable. He says that he often receives a response of "sad boy" whenever he posts a song in which he expresses what would be seen as not masculine emotions. 

“We are already in an epidemic of male depression and suicide. We don’t need any further proof that we have hurt men with our questioning of their need to be vulnerable and open. It is only a good thing to talk about what is on your mind."

In 1968 Brian Wilson started having a diminished role in the band, formerly the principal songwriter, as he started to have mental health challenges. He was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. This lead him to be inactive and turn toward drugs. However, through various medications and therapies he was able to begin writing and recording again and says he is doing better than ever now.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Last week a vigil was held, marking the one year anniversary of death by suicide of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave. His close friend, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, sang Hallelujah at his funeral. On Cornell’s next birthday, Bennington took his own life as well. Mental health is a daily struggle for more people than you would think, a small act of kindness you did yesterday may have meant more to someone than you could ever know.

Mental Health Awareness Month

I am continuing to use this month to promote Mental Health Awareness month. Normally this section is reserved for jokes about music news and fun facts. Unfortunately this week music news and mental health awareness month overlapped. Scott Hutchison the lead singer of Scottish band Frightened Rabbit committed suicide last week at the age of 36. The band was called Frightened Rabbit because that is what his mom used to his mom used to call him as a child because he was so shy. He started the band with his brother, and it grew over the next dozen years. His music has always been open and honest about his struggles and he has even talked about his struggles during interviews. One example of this is the their song Floating on the Forth, whose closing line is "I think I'll save suicide for another year". When asked about the song he said “It’s a real thought. It’s a thought that I’ve taken to a place that I’m far less comfortable with … I’ve gone 90% of the way through that song in real life". Ten years later and unfortunately he was not able to survive his struggle for another year.
